The Sentinel Trilogy — Short Stories

Before the stars. Before the station. Before everything changed — there was just Bron. These are the stories of the man he was before the universe demanded more of him.

A call about an abandoned vehicle on a Montana service road is the most ordinary thing in game warden Calvin Rourke's week. Ten years working these mountains has taught him every way a man goes missing up here. What he finds at mile marker eight is none of them, then the federal agents arrive to seal it away faster than anyone should have been able to get there.

Six weeks after the federal agents closed her case, Sheriff Arden Calloway is still in her office at midnight, going through photographs she was told to forget. Tonight she finds something in the reflection of a dirty truck window that changes everything — and decides what a twenty-seven-year cop does when the truth is bigger than the job.

Bron Matthews has been missing for ninety-two days. No body, no leads, and federal agents who took everything and explained nothing. His mother Barbara sits at her kitchen table at three in the morning, holding a fragment of something impossible, staring at the moon — and refusing to believe her son is dead.

Four hundred years of questions, one final answer. Sorath is the oldest living Ketheri, and he has spent his life studying the Vorai — ancient, indifferent, and unstoppable. When reason runs out, he makes the only choice left: not to fight, but to become something vast enough to matter.

She was a cargo handler. Not a warrior, not a scholar, not exceptional in any way anyone could measure. But the ship chose her anyway — and she said yes. The First is the story of Asha, the original Sentinel, and what it really takes to stand between ordinary people and something that would end all of it without noticing.

When the city of Thessara falls to an alien force that consumes everything it touches, a builder named Dareth follows an instinct older than language — north, through fire and silence, carrying her four-year-old daughter. What she finds is a sanctuary holding forty-three thousand sleeping children. And a watch she will keep for eight thousand years.

When Bron Matthews vanishes, all anyone finds is his truck on a Montana forest service road, keys still inside. His brother Derek turns his living room wall into a year of evidence no lab or sheriff will explain. Then at two forty-seven one morning, Bron calls on a bad line and tells him to look up.

On the last night before Daedalus went to sleep, three thousand and forty-one people lay in stasis. Commander Oran was the last awake. He walked his empty station one final time and wrote a log nobody asked him to. Something honest. Eleven thousand years later, his words would be the first thing the AI read.

A plague empties Ren's station in six months. The survivors choose the long sleep, sealed in stasis to wait the sickness out. He watches every person he has ever known walk into that bay, the woman he never spoke to among them. Then he seals the door behind them and stays awake, alone, keeping the lights on for people who will never know he did it.

For eleven years Rachel Kowalski has worked the overnight shift inside Cheyenne Mountain, watching the screens the world sleeps under. At 0347 one morning, a contact crosses her scope for two seconds and is gone. Everyone else lets the system bury it. She doesn't, and what she pulls back up runs back forty years.

Cole Renner has hauled cargo across a dying dust world for eleven years, alone except for the girl he never meant to take in. Then his probe strikes something buried under the dunes, a ship, ancient, and faintly still alive. What he does next, and who he decides to stay for, is the whole story.
